The Royal Brierley Story

Royal Brierley is the oldest and most prestigious name in English Crystal. With a history that dates back to 1776, it’s glittering heritage represents a glass- making tradition spanning three centuries and 15 generations. The unique hand crafting skills needed to create the finest cut lead crystal have been handed down from father to son to grandson… and still continue to be practiced today.

The history of the Royal Brierley name began with the founding of a glassworks Briar Lea Hill in Stourbridge England during the great period of industrial innovation of that time. The products and skills that emerged were to make Stourbridge world famous for it’s crystal glass. The original business grew under the guidance of three families the De Hanzels, Honeybournes and then the Silvers. The daughters of Joseph Silvers married William Stevens and Samual Cox-Williams who took control of the business in 1847. The company prospered under the name of Stevens and Williams Glass Works, where an array of exciting innovations, techniques and designs were evolved. Using the brightest and best of created artists and craftsmen, it’s products became recognised and admired throughout the world.

In 1919 the business was awarded a Royal Warrant by King George V to signify appointment as the glassmaker to the British Monarch. To reflect this prestigious endorsement of their quality and products , Stevens and Williams changed the company name to Royal Brierley in 1931

A Unique Royal Endorsement

The granting of a Royal Warrant Holders as glass makers to the Monarch has been continued to the present Queen Elizabeth II. In 1985 the Royal Warrant as suppliers to the Household of The Prince of Wales was also awarded to Royal Brierley. The distinction of holding these two most prestigious Royal Warrants is without precedent for a crystal brand and confirms the highest reputation of Royal Brierley and its’ products.

The Company has enjoyed several Royal Visits to their factory including The Duke and Duches of York (1925), Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip (1957) and Diana Princess of Wales ( 1985 ).

Royal Brierley crystal is used in the British Royal Palaces for official entertaining and at all state events. The choice of Royal Brierley for such occasions reflects the greatest honor and prestige.
