Château Blaignan

Seat of the Lords of Blaignan in the Middle-Age, the chateau gave its name both to the land and to the noble family who owned the manor, there was nothing left of the ancient fortress, except for a few ruins next to the church in the old village of Blaignan. Pierre Merman, a protestant from a Dutch family that settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century, purchased the estate just after the Revolution. His family and, more particularly, his daughter, Jeanne Marie Reine-Peychaud, assisted by her husband Charles, made “Taffard-Blaignan” into a model estate. They extended the property considerably, repaired the buildings and built a country mansion of the type known locally as “chartreuse”.

As recognition of their reputation among Medoc wines, the estate was classified Cru Bourgeois in 1932, under the name “Chateau Taffard de Blaignan” thanks to the extreme care given to the vines since decades.

In 1973, the Chateau Taffard de Blaignan, managed by Mestrezat, changed its name to Chateau Blaignan and developed furthermore the estate. The first step was to enlarge the vineyard by the acquisition of 30 hectares, then followed by the construction of a new fermentation and ageing cellar.

Today, Chateau Blaignan is a model estate covering 140 hectares. With a great vineyard and a modern winery, vinegrower and winemaker produce high qualitative wines by combining old knowledge of winemaking and new technics.
